But more than a meeting, this film is a dialogue. In the centre of the image, the old man smiles at the filmmaker hiding behind her lens, thus putting the spectator in the position of an interlocutor. She asks him about his life. He is intrigued by France and by technology. She films him to present him to the world. He wants to see the images. The means and the words are simple, plain and vast like the barren scenery around them, but they are totally right. Mehr noch als eine Begegnung ist der Film ein Dialog. Der ins Zentrum des Bildes gerückte alte Mann lächelt die Filmemacherin an, die hinter dem Objektiv steht und den Zuschauer auf diese Weise am Gespräch beteiligt. Sie befragt den Greis über sein Leben, er möchte etwas über Frankreich oder Technologie erfahren; sie filmt ihn, um ihn der Welt vorzuführen, er möchte die Bilder sehen. Mittel und Worte sind einfach, schmucklos und so weiträumig wie die Wüstenlandschaft, die den Rahmen bildet; vor allem jedoch sind sie wahr. Die junge Frau und der alte Hirte knüpfen eine zärtliche Beziehung und lassen uns daran teilhaben. Ergreifend.
