Sélima and Sélim are 20 years old twins. Orphans whose mother died giving birth to them. They live in Tunis with their father Ali, an advocate at the bar of Tunis.

Ali never got over his wife's death, for which he blames the twins. He has wiped out all traces of her, and stubbornly refuses to answer his children when they ask about her.

Sélima is an archaeology student, specialising in underwater excavations. She wants to know the truth about her mother. Her diggings into her own past overlap with those into the past of her country.

Sélim is greedy, and slyer than his sister. He dreams of becoming a fashion designer and pretends not to be concerned about his mother, although he does spy on a neighbour with binoculars while she breastfeeds her baby.

One day, Sélima finds out that daughters only inherit half as much as their brothers. She demands an explanation from her father: "Is it because fathers only love their daughters half as much?"

Ali quotes the verse from the Koran which the law is based on, and tells Sélima that this, unambiguous rule cannot be interpreted any differently.
Ali dies. Sélim applies the inheritance law strictly and leaves to go live abroad.
