This vast musical fresco covers hundreds of years of history from enslavement to 20th-century immigration. Set on an enormous slavers ship and boasts a dazzling array of brilliant choreography, wide-ranging musical styles and sharp satire.

WEST INDIES talks about an island in the Caribbean Sea, about the history of the Caribbean peoples. Yesterday, it was slavery: the most robust men and women are uprooted by millions from the African continent, embarked by force in slavers boats, sold on public squares. Today, another trafficking is taking place in the opposite direction: thousands of men and women join the ranks of other immigrants in order to escape unemployment and famine in their own country. History's present and past overlap inexorably.
Sea and boat, these "long journeys without return", are the permanent symbolic of so many uprootings. West Indies takes place entirely in a slavers caravel reconstructed on a true scale and placed in the iron skeleton of one of the largest French factories: shock of two symbols, opposite burst of pain and hope. History and life always carrying the lights to come: West Indies...
