Billy Kahora is the editor of Kwani?, Kenya 's foremost creative arts journal. Kahora also writes fiction and recently completed an MSc in Creative Writing with distinction at the University of Edinburgh as a Chevening Scholar. Before that he studied and worked in South Africa for eight years and in between worked as an editorial assistant for one of the largest African news sites, AllAfrica.comin Washington D.C. He has a Bachelor of Journalism degree and postgraduate diploma in Media Studies from Rhodes University, South Africa.
Kahora has been published in Vanity Fair, the Mail&Guardian and the East African Standard and was highly commended for his short story; 'Treadmill Love' by the 2007 Caine Prize judges. He has recently edited Kenya Burning, a visual narrative of the Kenyan post-elections crisis published by the GoDown Arts Centre and Kwani.
He wrote, together with the German scrpitwriter/producer Tom Tykwer the script of SOUL BOY (a film shot almost exclusively in Africa's largest slum, Kibera in Nairobi) that was directed by Hawa Essuman. This Kenyan-German low budget production was first screened in January 2010 at the Göteborg Film Festival. His work on SOULBOY led to him working as a writing supervisor for the Oscar Academy Awards nominated film, Nairobi Half Life.
