The National Archives of Fiji was established in 1954 as the Central Archives of Fiji and the Western Pacific High Commission. We became the National Archives of Fiji in 1970 when Fiji gained independence.

The National Archives of Fiji (NAF) is a department under the Ministry of Information, National Archives & Library Services of Fiji. The department is responsible for the acquisition, care, preservation and administration of the permanent public records of Fiji, and ensuring that these records are available to Government, the people of Fiji and the public at large for information and research purposes.

NAF's reference Library is also the National Deposit Library. All local publishers are required to submit a copy of their publications here to be held as part of Fiji's documentary heritage.

These functions are defined in the Public Records Act, Cap 108, and the Deposit of Books Act, Cap 109 of the Laws of Fiji.
