STEVENSON is pleased to present new work by Guy Tillim. This is the artist's first solo exhibition to take place in Johannesburg in a decade.

Tillim's latest series of photographic images, taken in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, in 2012, draws on the formal and aesthetic concerns of his Second Nature series, as well as the ongoing interest in power and ideology in Africa that informed his Avenue Patrice Lumumba and Congo Democratic series.

Here, Tillim considers the construct of our perception of space in a city landscape, situated amidst the realities of an African capital and, inevitably, described through the prism of Africa's colonial past. The irony of the name of the city, with its complicated relationship to autocracy and democracy, permeates Tillim's images of this urban landscape, as do the markers of power that recur throughout his work.

Tillim was born in Johannesburg in 1962 and lives in Cape Town. His Second Nature series showed at Huis Marseille Museum for Photography in Amsterdam in 2012 and was included on Intense Proximity - La Triennale 2012 in Paris. Avenue Patrice Lumumba has shown at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris; Museu Serralves in Porto; the Peabody Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Foam Fotografiemuseum in Amsterdam; Extracity, Antwerp; Kunsthalle Oldenburg, Germany; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Contact Photography Festival in Toronto; Lannan Foundation Gallery, Sante Fe, New Mexico; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Ohio; and the Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and is still travelling.

Tillim's work is included on The Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life at the International Center of Photography, New York (2012), travelling to the Haus der Kunst, Munich (15 February to 26 May 2013); and on Appropriated Landscapes at the Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm/Burlafingen, Germany (until May 2013). Other important exhibitions include Lost Places - Orte der Photographie at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany, in 2012; Photography: New Documentary Forms at Tate Modern, London, in 2011; Documenta 12 in 2007 and the São Paulo Bienal in 2006.
